Digital Sales Transformation: Exploring Its Influence on Revenue Generation and Business Expansion
Abstract
Digital technologies are transforming how firms find, engage, sell to and retain customers. This article examines digital sales transformation, defined as the integrated redesign of sales channels, technologies, processes and capabilities using digital tools. It explores how this transformation influences revenue generation and business expansion. Drawing on research in sales management, digital marketing and information systems, it proposes a conceptual framework in which three enablers support three transformation domains: connectivity, digital payments and data infrastructure on one side, and digital channels, sales technology, and people and processes on the other. These domains in turn drive revenue and expansion. The Indian context illustrates the scale of change. Internet subscribers rose from 302 million in March 2015 to 429 million by September 2017. Broadband subscriptions nearly doubled from 149.75 million to 276.52 million in the year to March 2017. Monthly payments through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) grew from about ₹707 crore in December 2016 to ₹13,144 crore in December 2017. The e-commerce market was estimated at US$ 38.5 billion in 2017, nearly double its 2015 level. The article explains the mechanisms through which digital sales transformation raises revenue: lead generation, conversion, order value, purchase frequency and retention. It also shows how it supports expansion into new geographies, segments and business models. Barriers including legacy systems, channel conflict, skills gaps, data quality and trust are discussed, and the article closes with managerial implications and directions for research.
